River’s Edge Café

Welcome to "La Bella Cucina" (The Beautiful Kitchen), our new dinner menu. After eighteen years of preparing "American" cuisine, Chef Bob has decided to return to his Italian roots, and some deep roots they are. Bob's family is Italian through and through. In 1906, his Grandpa Nicholas and Grandma Louise arrived in America from Potenza, near Naples, in the name of love. They wanted to marry, but Louise's parents felt Nick's family didn't own quite enough sheep! It would not be a suitable match. Well, love conquers all. The two fled to America and were soon married.

Although they never entered into the restaurant business, food is what brought the family together. So, they cooked. Every Sunday, Grandma Louise would prepare the traditional "Sunday Gravy" and everyone would gather to eat and laugh together. She taught her daughters, one of whom was Chef Bob's mother, Millie, the family recipes. Aunt Rose, Millie's older sister, became a wonderful cook and soon took over most of the family meals. She made Braciola and prepared Grandpa Nick's homemade sausage for everyone.

Shortly before she died, Aunt Rose lived with us for a little while. She happily and patiently passed down the family recipes to Bob and me. We prepared all of her old favorites, and as we did, we wrote everything down, never thinking that we would someday use what she had taught us here at River's Edge Cafe.

We have tried to honor all of Bob's family with our new Italian menu. We hope that you can taste the love of his humble, hard-working family and the old world goodess in every bite.
